Title: The Birthday Wish
FADE IN:
EXT. SMALL TOWN - EARLY MORNING
A humble neighborhood. Old buildings with peeling paint. The sky, a soft shade of orange, signals the start of another day.
INT. MODEST APARTMENT - BEDROOM - DAWN
A worn-out alarm clock TICKS on a wooden crate, doubling as a nightstand. A BOY (14), small for his age, rubs his tired eyes. His name is NOAH. He gazes at the calendar, where today’s date is circled in blue ink: His Birthday.
NOAH (whispering to himself) Happy birthday, Noah.
His stomach GRUMBLES. He tiptoes past the small living area where his MOTHER (40s) sleeps on a couch. Exhaustion lines her face. His FATHER’S jacket hangs by the door; his job keeps him away most nights.
Noah takes a deep breath and checks the old laptop on the kitchen table. The screen flickers, struggling to stay on.
NOAH’S POV - COMPUTER SCREENA webpage reads: “Make Money Online Fast!”
Noah’s fingers hesitate over the keyboard. He knows his parents barely have enough for rent, let alone a birthday gift. He doesn't want them to worry.
MONTAGE:
- Noah watching tutorials on ways to earn online.
- He tries taking surveys, but most require bank details he doesn’t have.
- He attempts reselling old items, but there’s little of value in their home.
- He stumbles upon a freelance writing platform.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
His mother returns home, sighing as she sets a grocery bag down. Noah quickly minimizes the screen.
MOTHER (softly) What are you up to, sweetheart?
NOAH Nothing, just... just studying.
She kneels and holds his hands.
MOTHER I’m sorry we can’t do much for your birthday.
Noah forces a smile.
NOAH I have everything I need.
MOTHER You’re just like your father. Always thinking of others first.
Noah nods, guilt gnawing at him. If only she knew how much he wanted to help.
INT. BEDROOM - LATE NIGHT
He writes his first gig listing: “I will write short stories for $5.”
Days pass. No orders.
Just when he’s about to give up—
PING!
An order. Then another. And another.
Noah stays up every night, pouring his heart into the stories. His skills improve. His reviews glow.
MONTAGE:
- Noah’s first $50 lands in his account.
- He secretly pays part of the electric bill.
- His mother notices the lighter burden and wonders how.
- Noah’s earnings grow, his confidence with them.
One evening, his father arrives home. Tired, but smiling.
FATHER You look different, son.
Noah hesitates. Then he tells them everything.
Silence. Then—
His parents HUG him, tears in their eyes. Pride. Love.
MOTHER Noah... this is the best gift we could ever ask for.
His father ruffles his hair, voice thick with emotion.
FATHER Happy Birthday, son.
Noah finally allows himself to celebrate.
FADE OUT.
