Joking apart there is a strong environmental argument for cow genocide. Cows and other livestock are probably the most significant threat to our environment today.
We need to cut our dependence on cattle drastically if our civilization is to survive in any semblance of its present form.
Most environmentally informed people are well aware of the recent U.N. report “Live stocks long shadow” report that cites Cows as a more serious threat to the environment than cars.
For those of you not inclined to wade thru the 400 page report here’re some of the shocking conclusions.
The planets 1.5 billion (and growing) number of cattle, together with other livestock are responsible for nearly 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions – more than every car in the world.
The production and transport of animal feed and the land clearance of nature vegetation for animal feed production are responsible for 9% of the planets carbon dioxide emissions.
The cows digest processes produce over 30% of all methane released to the atmosphere – methane is 20x more dangerous to our environment than Co2.
Toxins produced by cow waste products, production of feed, and meat production are a very significant factor in coral reef deprecation and the pollution of coastal waters.
Inland waters also suffer from toxic runoff and the over nourishment of certain aggressive water plants. Fertiliser used to produce animal feed finds it’s way into the water system and causes massive blooms in certain plants and algae’s which choke all other life
Land usage for the production of meat and dairy is very inefficient. Most if not all of the world’s food shortage problems could be solved by eliminating the world’s livestock.
The major cause of deforestation in the developing world is the clearance of land for cattle grazing or the production of animal feed.
Despite all the evidence that many of our present environmental problems could be greatly eased by drastically cutting the world livestock population the demand for meat is rising.
One of the very best things anyone of us can do for the environment is to reduce our meat and dairy consumption. However there is only so much a single individual can do the very best thing you can do for the environment is multiply your effort by re-educating others.
The very best way to do this is spread article like this far and wide, by far the easiest way to do this is to utilize the power of the internet and current boom in social networking.
